Often underestimated, skirting boards are defined as the finishing element that is placed above the floor in correspondence and adherence to the wall and that has the function of covering the distance between the floor and the wall, the so-called perimeter joint, and of protecting the lower part of the wall.
Why the skirting board?
The function of the skirting board, which wraps around the interior and exterior walls of a house, can partly be deduced from its name. It is a protective function, preventing damage to the walls from impact from furniture, shoes and... brooms.
The second function is to conceal the space created between the floor and the wall. A space that must be respected when laying a floor on a radiant system, to allow for expansion when the heating is turned on. But even if there is no underfloor heating system, it is not possible to have the floor perfectly adhering to the wall, which is why the skirting board must be provided in any case.
The last function is aesthetic: the skirting board is the ideal continuation of the door frames that continue to delimit and define the floors.
Would the staircase look as good without skirting boards?
A small but very important detail: without this skirting board the staircase would not be as beautiful as it is now. We have played with the tone of the wall for a modern atmosphere.

In addition to these three 'traditional' functions, the skirting board, as we shall see, can be used to hold cables inside, or to become a heating system, or can integrate LED lights.
What material for the skirting board
The most commonly used materials for the production of skirting boards for homes and shops/offices are:
► WOOD: in veneered or solid versions, it can be matched to the floor or door frames;
► TILES: the ceramic skirting board will match the floor;
► LAMINATE: Laminate skirting boards can be used when laying laminate flooring;
► ALUMINIUM: Satin or polished aluminium goes well with minimalist furnishings;
► STEEL: steel is probably the most expensive of the alternatives, and is used in refined environments;
► PVC: This is the most economical material. It has the advantage of flexibility and reduced thickness, as well as low cost.
Laying skirting boards
Depending on the material you choose for the skirting board, it can be installed:
► BONDED: use silicone or adhesive to fix the skirting board to the wall.
► NAILED: using a dowel, nail or screw.
In any case, the installation must include a 45° cut at the external and internal edges.
