I went back to take pictures in this flat in Verona: antique oak flooring and large formats in a modern bathroom. A renovation that I am happy to tell you about!
Renovation of a flat in Verona
I'm happy to tally about one of 2018 renovation that I was most excited about!
To the north of Verona, in the historic centre of a small village about halfway up Valle d'Illasi, on the first floor of a historic building, a small flat felt the need to be modernised.
Its windows, which overlook the street, give the idea of a building that boasts several centuries of history.
In fact, Marco's father, a distinguished gentleman who has lived in the building all his life, confirms that the structure dates back to 1700.
I am fascinated by the rooms in Marco's flat... a bit crooked, irregular, with an infinite series of details: the beam to support where modern space needs require the loss of a partition, the discovery of an old beam above the door, the stone wall deliberately stripped of plaster and left exposed and the fireplace, very essential.
The result is intimate and cosy.
Modernising without distorting
After this pleasant leap into the past we had to get back to us. I won't hide the initial difficulty of finding the perfect solution that would make the flat suitable for a 30-year-old boy, without distorting the ancient context.
Of one thing I was sure: their floor would be wooden.
We all agreed with this idea and started walking around the showroom with wooden planks under our arms to lay them at the foot of the large windows so that we could see all the natural nuances.
"This one has few knots."
"Too light!"
"We're almost there with this one but I don't know..."
And then I introduced him, a rustic planed and antiqued oak. We looked at each other and knew it would be The Choice.
An essential contribution to creating the right atmosphere!
The floor matches the sense of imperfection that characterises this environment. Each board laid expresses the unique character of a material that offers special sensations.
We wanted to give continuity to the environment by laying wood flooring in all the rooms.
A precious bathroom
For the bathroom it was simpler: we immediately opted for large stoneware slabs, we wanted a modern touch in the room.
During the first appointment, Marco told me that he prefers dark colours, so I proposed a black tile that recalls the soft, textured surface of the resins.
Black is a bold choice, but it offers neutrality and has the particularity of making the furniture elements stand out.
To liven up the bathroom, I suggested covering the shower and the wall behind the sanitary ware with a tone-on-tone mosaic.
The decoration blends in with the rest, but thanks to the bronze tiles it creates a vibration necessary to soften the rigidity of the lines.
Curiosity
Marco reused the wooden frame of a window to make the bathroom mirror, a customised natural mirror that stands out against the neutral background.
Thanks
A special thanks to Marco, a shrewd guy who followed my suggestions without losing sight of them.
Thanks to Sergio and all the installers who made the project possible.
